One of the fastest-growing categories of exterior lighting are LED floodlights. The demand for such products is mostly due to the development of civilisation, understood as the improving standard of living and a change in consumer habits, including, in particular, an increasing frequency of outdoor activities, also after dusk. The range of applications of these universal luminaires is, therefore, very broad – from private residential areas through the surroundings of buildings to playing fields and car parks.
This article discusses LED floodlights for standard applications that require a simple, fast, effective and affordable solution. In response to these needs, Signify has developed the LED Ledinaire Floodlight product group and its latest, 3rd generation.
The 3rd generation of Ledinaire Floodlight includes 2 luminaire formats:
- smaller, referred to as BVP164, with wattage from 10 to 70 W,
- larger, referred to as BVP165, with wattage from 100 to 200 W.
We will first discuss the smaller luminaires, which are used primarily in private residential areas and as additional illumination for circulation areas or building surroundings.
The BVP164 size offers 4 wattage levels: 10, 20, 50 and 70 W. Each level is available with 2 colour temperatures: neutral white 4000 K or warm white 3000 K. Both versions have a colour rendering index of more than 80, which is a very good result for outdoor lighting. Additionally, each wattage level is available in the standard on/off version and in a version with a motion detector. We use PIR motion detectors, which have 3 buttons to control the range and sensitivity of motion detection and the illumination time after motion detection. The descriptions of versions with a motion detector include the acronym MDU, which stands for “Motion Detection Unit”. The BVP164 luminaire has an optical system with a wide, symmetric 100° beam. The highest wattage, i.e., 70 W, is also available in an option with asymmetric beam.

The bigger size, BVP165, offers 3 wattage levels: 100, 150 and 200 W. Each level is available with 2 colour temperatures: neutral white 4000 K or warm white 3000 K. Also, the luminaires are available with symmetric and asymmetric beam. High wattage levels also have enhanced surge protection of 4 kV, which is required because the luminaires are installed in outdoor systems, which are particularly sensitive to the negative consequences of surges. The BVP165 format is mostly used to illuminate car parks, sports fields or industrial areas.
Other important characteristics of the 3rd generation of PHILIPS Ledinaire Floodlight product group include the following:
- high luminous efficacy of 120 lm/W, which is a very good result in this product class and proves that the solutions are energy-efficient,
- very good service life of approximately 50,000 h,
- factory-fitted connection cable,
- high IP65 protection rating,
- high impact resistance IK07 for the BVP164 format and IK08 for the BPV165 format,
- high power factor over 0.9,
- luminaire made of recyclable materials, such as aluminium and glass,
- universal mounting bracket which can be freely rotated around the luminaire.
